nagotiated project

the presentation

below is the presentation explaining the films treatment and synopsis it show the narrative with iluustrative aid al though not explanation if audience where to veiw the presentation in which i shall add in text so that audience will understand it.

fairy line test 1

this is a fairy test for the shot when one interacts with peter in the sense that he inst meant to be there. the movement was animated in flash as i wanted to be able to animate quickly and wanted to export the film as a png and take out the background so that i can colour in in photoshop using the colour doge.  drawing is not strong and quick rough i thought after digital animating it on flash i could draw over the animation frame by frame in photoshop unless i can find away to create the glow effect in adobe flash.

the animation if quite unrealistic the legs swing originally did not include as many frames and found that it is to quick and felt needed more of a easein to stop the character at the then on the shot. i am unsure as to whether to add in more frame to when she stop flying from the left. as she top unrealistically and suddenly. it wuld be best ot add it any way and compare the two to see if i would like to keep the ease in or not. i am still experimenting with the character movements.

fairy line test 2

i animated another test this is the shot after the fairy appears this shot is the physically inspecting him. the head movements aswells as the fairires flight i wanted to be really quick. the timing is main five frames from one head tilt to the next. i was very happy with the animation and timing i think i may take some of the frames out to see if the timing would look more to how i want the fairies to move.

peter walk cycle 1

this walk cycle didnt work as there was confustion again eith which foot i when with first and i didn't realise until filming it that i had it only taking one step for 24 frames. i will be re aniamting this so that the detail shall be shown like with the same mistake

Peter wide walk cycle 2

the walk cycle below is for peter pan with the drawing it was really small and difficult to determine the spacing and creating enough spacing for the animation, although the walk look good but i think it would be best to re animate it with using the whole a4 page so that all the detail of the character face and the spacing would be easir to draw and the timing would work more fluidly.

peter mid shot walk cycle 1 on twos

i did a line test under the camera. i thought to line tests the pecil work first before inking although with the first few tests peter is inked. i really liked the cycle i found that it works well and that the timing works this will be cycled with the rest of the animation of peter. im not sure i dont like the fact the top of his head gets bigger as he walks higher. after asking peer about what they though

peter walk cycle mid  2 on twos

with the walk cycle i shown above the shot include some more movement which him turning his head to watch a fairy fly over his head i found that it worked fine and i am happy with the animation although i think the position at certain frames dont work and i got confused with how far down and how far up  the character walks in the cycle while turning his head. i felt that i manege to animate it fine and my need to include boil holds.

peter pan mid walk improved frames take out

Peter Pan Mid improve on one's

peter pan mid shot walk cycle improvement

with this test i animated and added in more the animation of the shot in with peter walking forward i wanted to keep adding make sure that everything worked and the animation was going smoothly

Peter Pan mid shot final walk.

the final shot i am very happy with and will move to the next process of scanning in the animation cutting it out in photoshop and compositing it into after effect with the fairy circular orbs

final shot

the video is the final composited shot the fairy that flys over Peters head i animated with in after effect the fairy animation i feel is great using after effect is very efficient and works well with the work and brings more life to scene the small orbs in the background give the shot more life i feel that i could add in a light shimmering of the background fairies to give it a bit more life to it

peter pan walk cycle wide shot attempt 2

after the first attempt at the work cycle i released that because peter is distant in the shot doesn't mean he should be distant in the line test i re animated the walk for the second shot with peter being bigger on the page. in after effects i can then add  him in with the trees and background fairies and scale him down to create the illustion that he is far away from the camera this is a great technique as this keeps all the detail of his face iinvolved with the shot with the animation i need to add in his hair and then i can composite it in after effects.

back ground tree animated, inked and cut out

final shot

male fairy test 1 on twos

this movement was the male fairy noticing the music being played by peter then flying towards him to dance in the other shot.  the movement of the character crouching down to fly out of shot. although the jumping animation is very quick and needs to be slowed down to do this i will adding more frame to the animation to where the fairy flys away/ as there is only 3 frame to portray that movement.

male fairy test improvements on two

Male Fairy Improvements on two

male fairy digitally coloured and inked with wing digitally coloured and inked

after i finally finished the animation and happy with the animation i took it into photoshop and digitally inked over the animation and animated the wings sprouting out of the characters back which i found worked really well. the next step with the process is adding in with the fairy orbs/circles in after effects.

Male Fairy final shot

this is a final shot all composited in after effects i am very happy with the animation and feel that it is ready to go through to the cut for the scene

Female fairy on twos
this was the first test for the female fairy. i felt that the movement worked well but also to quick the same as the male fairy test above. if i hold more of the animation for example when the character stop mid air it should make the animation better and seem fluid. i think the animation for when the fairy fly out of shot it to quick and adding in in-betweens will improve the animation.

Female fairy improvement on twos

with this test i have added in the hold and each end of the movement. i do like the movement and happy with the holds this will be pointless when digitally inking and colouring as i can just ad the boils in post with photoshop.

Female Fairy improvement on Ones

the movement on ones is a lot better timed for the fairies movement as i am taking movement from dragonflies and damselflies. this portrays the amount of speed both get to. which will work well with the fairy using their power of flight wisely.

boiled shot on ones

i was finally able to put the scanned drawing together with the boils included.  when first looking at this shot i automatically looked and the bottom right of the shot which is not where i wanted the audiences to look.  which i am unsure whether the boils are a distraction. i think becuase of the dominance of the bacl for the background and for the tree i feel that its not great for the balance for the audiences eye i will change the tree as the black background.

boil shot on twos

this i experimented on the timing with the boils with having on two as i feel that it is a lot better on two as on ones it is very distracting towards the audiences i got profession feedback to experiment with having not inked background and having just with no background in the PNG sequence. which i will experiment with and see the final result.

peter pan London CGI test

with the flying scene shown in the animatic it was worrying for the traditional approach to take a long time the suggestion that i got with feedback. i created a rough basic model in maya of the scene of London near the themes this is just to experimented to see if it works.  the i tried to create the same aesthetics as the film mimicking the aesthetics of the film. after showing the feedback i got was to make the model more rough to create the real aesthetics.

CGI Tracking shot test

i did a tracking shot in CGI to experiment with the flying scene i felt that this worked for this scene although i prefer to used after effect as it is a lot easier using 2d drawn houses like shown in my pre production work and moving the camera through the roof tops of London.

CGI Tracking shot with peter

i added in a 2d image of peter pan to portray hims flying i was very happy with this and felt over it works i still need to do a lot of editing towards this concept and it is under developed something like this would be used for 2d drawing of houses

CGI Tracking shot with peter lighting change

i experimented with changing the lighting to make peter blend with the scene more it work rather well which i was very surprised although i still feel there needs to be more improvement to the shot. i think it would be best to get someone who specialises in VFX and get them to create the shot. we have mentioned that this film is a big project and its best to have a crew which i will be doing it the future with the help of funding.

mermaid lagoon test 1

i experimented with the background for the opening shot of peter drawing out his story i wanted to have it looking like he is in Neverland drawing it out portraying that that shot is meant to be set after peter pan and Wendy or peter pan in scarlett. i decided to animated the mermaids from mermaid lagoon and including the mermaids. the mermaids i wanted to portray them to be quite creepy like the adaptation i have done with the fairies the CGI works well and was happy with the short animation of the mermaid on the rock the models i took a model of a scary female character and and tail of a whale and added in the rigg and then animated. i feel that the lighting could be improved and you cant see a lot with it. this will be added in with a green screen animation of  peters drawing.

Mermaid Lagoon Test 2

the second attempted i improved on the lighting and i feel that it worked well and did improve it dramatically although i still feel the lighting can be more improved the animation of the water slowed down at a certain part which i feel i should change it. have the animation solidly continues

Mermaid Lagoon test 3

the lighting has improve although the animation of the water is still to slow and stop and starts in random places which is something i am not happy with this would likely be because of a key framing problem in may i will see if i can fix it the best that i can although this is just a test and may not be used in the final film.

mermaid lagoon day time image.

mermaid lagoon test

i did a test of mermaid lagoon for the introduction of peter explaining his story this went well and i was really happy with the water animation i feel that the modelling for the mountains and rocks could of been a lot better although this was a test to see how i could create vfx and make its seem that peter is in Neverland.

Peter Pan pixelation test 1

the first pixelation test i did in the stop motion room to be able to have green screen included for the visual effect i used a wooden board the make it seem that he was leaning the drawing pad or pater on his thighs. which because of board took too much up of the shot  unabling me to have the green screen in shot. the animation worked really well and i found that the timing was very smooth and felt natural for the this shot for the film.

Peter Pan pixilation test 2

the second attempt was better the lighting wasn't to bright and the detail to my hands worked well better i think it would of been nice to zoom out more to include more of my arms. for the final shot when filming i would liked to include my hands to be covered in mud as peter would be quite a muddy child and include more leaved and pan pipes in the shot to imply more about that it peter pan like the native american head dress etc. i did think to film it in a set representing peter pan den. wth this including things in the background

peter pan pixelation test 3

this test work really well it was very smooth and the timing was very varied which I found would be more intriguing towards the audience.  the shot choice didn't work at all i felt that it was too clse and need to be more of a top shot than a mid or angled shot. and more wide to portray the whole apperance of peter drawing as the narrative will need to be portrayed with in the film.

Pixelation green screen

thi experiment work really  nice it was a lot smoother that the other two the top shot from using the rostrum worked a lot better. the spacing with the animating was a lot closer which gave it such a lovely smooth movement. the little intro with the leaves i found worked a lot better. i experiment with green screen so i was able to composite it with the CGI.

peter pan pixelation VFX test

i composited the green screen pixelation animation with the day time mermaid lagoon which i found worked well i experimented with the lighting in after effects. which worked well and combined with the cgi and cgi lighting which i was very happy with  i feel that this day time animation it a lot better the night with the mermaids included.

fairy test 3

i animated the fairy for the shot for when peter turns around and notices her. i really like this one and feel that it is better that the original that i did in adobe flash. the legs swing i fell need to be slower it stop very sudden. and ease in will be best for the improvements i think also adding in an ease in to when her whole body stops before her legs swing as i think its is also to sudden the same way as the legs i don't thing the upper body needs as many as the legs although i shall experiment with the ease in and see the results of that over all i am happy with the animation and the timing and speed as i want the fairies to fly and move very fast.

Fairy Digitally coloured and inked

after the line testing i digitally coloured her in it was quite a pain with the fairies as essentially i am drawing the animation twice. the animation looks great coloured and with the background  i have it work well for the glow effect used by the colour doge in photoshop

fairy wings digitally animated and coloured
the wings i digitally animated and coloured and inked in photoshop. i have experience with animating wing from the Bee animation i did in first year i am happy with the animation of the wings and will composite it together in after effects.

Peter pan turn Attempt 1

final shot 4

the looks at peter intriguingly

i really liked this animation and find it works well and have no problems i added i hold of each end of the head turn to portray the pauses. in the final animation i will added the holds to be boiling i didn't bother with adding in the five frame of boiling in the line test as i will be drawing over the animation in Photoshop for the colour and ink stage of the film process. with in this stage i will draw over the character 5 time to create the boiling effect.

Queen Fairy Lip sync 'Peter you play such beautiful music I shall reward you with the wish of your heart.'

i really liked the lip sync a lot i was happy with the animation being perfectly in sync. i did the maths before and noting down the frame in which each syllable is said. i animated the body movement first timing it for each word i wanted part of movements to land for example the duration of the arms extending outwards i wanted to be in time with when she said peter in which using the note i was able to sync it perfectly towards the dialogue after repeating this process with the rest of the other body movement i moved on to the facial expression keeping them in time with the body movements and syllables. as i was animating i did stop and start acting it out as i sat there mimicking the movements which helped a lot and help me invent the movements needed.

i am happy with the lip sync although when coming to colour and ink the brush tool is very thick and the brush tool i use in Photoshop is a lot thinner. i will have to find a way to be able to ink it with out any problems with not being able to see the lines. i got feedback from a peer saying that the character was quite far away and suggested having the camera closer.

as little as this lip sync

this lip sync i drew out the character last key frame and start frame so that the animation doesn't go badly out of uniform when she bend forwards. the uniform inst great but it good although it fits the child like drawing.  i did the same method as the lip sync before animating the body language. i felt that this character was very sarcastic and treats Peter like he's really Naive the fact that he leans forward squinting and making the hand gesture being really patronising.  the hand gesture is in the book at is told that the queen fairy put her hands together making out a measurement, which i found was good to including movement of characters described from the book with in the adaptation. over all i was really happy with this animation and really like the exaggeration and the amount of movement.

male fairy test twos

I inked the animation of the male fairy that takes off after hearing Peter playing his pan pipes. the inking method was not easy with using the circular drawings of the fairies movement. i think it would of been better if i animated him with all the detail traditionally instead of circular human shape the animation i think if fine i just think that the out line could of been cleaner. the wing popping out of the fairies back i is a small adaption i added in i understand it my have been done before with creature having wing coming from their back although with the fairies in my film the wings a tuck into their skin following their spine down. i think the direction of the fairy could of been improved. the character starts on the bottom left cross on the rule of thirds and then moves in s curved motions towards the more central third. i think it would of been better in the character moved forward in a diagonal motions towards the top right cross on the rule of thirds.

male fairy test on 1s

i prefer this animation than the male fairy on twos as my adaptation of the fairies are that they are very quick with movements and feel that the test on ones. i will be using this in the final film.

peter pan rough composition cut 1

i did a cut with all the peter animations composited with the backgrounds and glowing orb fairies the pacing of the the film so far fits with the original animatic which i was happy with. i showed this with the weekly rushes in which the feedback i got was very informative. i was told that the animations of peter wasn't realistic towards his ages and confused the audience of his age. the design of Peter also portrayed him to look older than he is. in the book he is 7 days old although the designs and animation portrayed him as 10 - 12 years of ages. the walk cycle look more like a grown mans walk and not of a child walk. this was for both the walk cycle in the first and seconds shot. the legs on the cycle were to spacious for a child and the arms where also the same.

the turn around was also unbelievable. i still need to add in all the fairy animation i have done and composite them in after effect and add it to this competition. from the feedback i got i understood and agree when animating peter i didn't take that much thought into it as much as the fairies. and neesd to think more in depth with how he moves. the feedback was very help and gain me experience as an animator having it analysed in a daily rush and as a film maker being able to take the feedback listen and act upton it. i will re Animate all of the Peter animations and make him more convicing as a child and add in the fairy animation all composited together.

fair peering out behind a tree

i got feed back from my tutor who really liked the framing from a sketch on another film idea. i decided to add it in with the use of a fairy i thought this could create more mystery towards these creature to the audience the close up works well and give some strong detail to what the fairies look like up close than as a ball of light as shown in the more wide shots. the animation is of a female fairy character peering out to look at their new visitor Peter. i liked the animation and was happy that i was able to keep the framing. the tree will be added in post production. i will next colour and ink this and composite it in after effects.

fairy peer out from the tree digitally coloured and inked

i digitally inked and coloured the fairy peering from behind the tree the boiling effect works really well as i was unable to cover the whole of the fairy which creates a lovely boiling effect

Fairy Tree Shot

i animated the tree first so i had a base to work with when animated the fairy peering her head out from the tree. after animating this it will be composited in after effects

final shot

peter fall line test

i attempted to re animate peter when he turn around i thought as a child something flying close to a child face would more likely to cause the child to loose balance.the aniamtion of the fall i fount worked well but needed improvement. i still need to add in more frames for when he gets back up and need to draw in the arms and hair detail.

fairies dance composition

with this shot since the animatic i finally was able to add the detail of the fairies. the original animation of the fairies was the same method for the male and female fairies shot that react the the music and had the circular human drawing. the same problems accord the same as the male fairy. this animation in Photoshop was done using three Photoshop documents. the first part of the fairies the ink was a lot thicker than the other part the main problem is the illustration and drawings wasn't strong and it slightly lost uniform. same as the male fairy. drawing over the circular line test animation was difficult to the the proportions and head shape right. the heads especially the female fairies became very elongated and didnt' look the same as they do in the other shots. it would of been better to animated them with all their detail in the traditional animation the same as how i animated the intrigued fairy and the shot with the fairy flying towards peter.

female fairy composition

this animation i was able to colour and ink same as the males fairy and fairy dance composition. although i found that it was a lot easier to ink than the other two and look a lot better and cleaner. although when the fairy stop to look at peter playing i feel that she should be looking more to the bottom left i may change the boil in Photoshop to make her look in the right direction. with this shot originally there is two characters on the tree branch i would like to add her in an animate her eating a bowl of food with her hands and watch the other fly off. the reason why i would like to have her eating out of a bowl, is that in the novel of peter pan in Kensington gardens the fairies would eat at the fairies ball out of a bowl with out using a knife and fork portraying the messy immature animal like characteristics of the fairies like in the novel. depending on time after i can have a good cut of the scene i will add in the other character.

intrigued fairy

the intrigued fairy the traditional animation i found work fine and just needed to add the boils in i was able to add them and it look a lot better having the boils than having the holds.  i think that when animating a movement and the line work boils a bit and then stops suddenly it look like the life has gone from the animation.the head movements work well the original idea for the movement was to move her head like a pigeon. pigeon very often jerk their head in a turn or tilting motion in a short space of time the jerking motion that pigeons portray i felt would be a interesting and unusual sight to see on a human like creature. this aid my adaption of the fairies to make them more creepy and unsettling. over all really happy with the animation but might experiment with the timing of the head movement to see if i can make it more jerky.

the video below explain about the jerking motion that pigeon and how it work. although for me it more of a reference and aiding my explanation toward the head movement that was inspired for the fairies. the information given in the video is really that important towards it. i would of been good to get a reference video of my own although pigeons arnt easy to film.

Dragonflies and Damselflies

http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/animals/blogs/how-tell-difference-between-dragonfly-and-damselfly

http://www.british-dragonflies.org.uk/content/dragonfly-and-damselfly-identification-help

i researched into dragonflies and damselflies and researched the difference in male and female to put towards the design and movement of the fairies. the male dragon flies are a lot bulkier than the female which is something i put towards the design elements of the male fairy. the female flies more cautiously almost like a ballet movement which i feel works although a lot of the dragonflies hover and the bolt into motion at 30kph which is where most of the influences towards the fairies speed is taken from.   both dragonflies and damselflies have two pairs of wings the damselflies have longer front pair than the dragon flies their body are a lot thinner and shown in the images below.

DragonFly

Damselfly

as you can see their is a different damselflies eye don't touch at the top of the head like a dragonfly. the dragonflies are very quick and jerky when at rest which is what i wanted for the fairies movement at rest. the wings of the fairy much like the dragon flies don't move and can retract into the spine of the fairy.  the wing design was also used influences from dragonflies.

fairies dancing digitally coloured and ink

peter pan writing test

the idea for peter to draw the first shot i thought to experiment by using the write on tool in after effect the write on tool allows you to key frame the cross hair of the tool and animate it in a direction this will create the line of the page. the test i did was writing peter pan. the tool worked well and would of help with drawing out the frame of the first shot also  found that this method look a bit un clean i will experiment with drawing out the map.

rough cut 2

a did another composition and added in all of the composition shots of the fairies and and added them in. i still need to re animate Peter. the line tests that i have shown the lip sync got great feed back although the peter pan fall could of been improved and the design of peter need to be improved to make him look more like hims age as ive mentioned before. the fairy animations had good feed back and look fine fir the final production..  i will re design peter and re animate the movements as mention in the first composition.

peter pan head re designs page 1

with the re designs for peter i started thinking more with baby shape and thought more that babies do have big foreheads. i experimented again like in pre production with the design i start moving more to the original like on the first page below having even forehad to the jaw. relising this i started to draw the jaw smaller which worked better the design on the first page below i dont like at all itsstill looks like the original the process is to just keep drawing different ideas experimenting untill i am happy with the design.

Baby Clark Kent Superman Animated series

i watch superman the animated series and noticed the protagonist as a baby. the design for him i found was a great and perfect designs  his head is also big and look more skull shape than the designs i've done the eyes are very much like the style of  mine and the limit in detail is also their ill be taking a lot of inspiration from this design and might change a lot of details to not make it look identical.

peter pan head designs page 2

these design i like and feel are very much inspired by the superman design although i feel that it need more design work and and the face i feel should be smaller i think it would be best to start with trying the head shape first and then ad in the face i would like to go for more askull shape and changing the face to be small and closer to the jaw.

peter pan head re designs page 3

I then look at the head shape and making more of a skull shape some came out well and some just look awful i think a lot of these designs need more work a lot more work. i really like the bottom right design in the corner. although not sure on the giant fore head all though i don't really want to go for full realism and would like to have my own style towards the character.

peter pan head re designs page 4

this design i feel works well more towards the skull shape some of the drawings look like the original. design for the character. the design at the bottom of the page is a lot better towards keeping the skull shape for the head i prefer these design but i think i will continue to experiment so i have more of a range of designs to choose from.

peter pan head re designs page 5

these design i don't really like i do like the design of him looking up slightly and his for head being a lot bigger than jaw but i think i need to still

Baby References

i thought to experiment with a more realistic approach looking babies for the design. in my feedback their was mention of the fact that peter doesn't have a chin and that it is just a ciruclar line in which i felt was okay for a baby design although when looking at these they all have a litte chin portraying that their heads aren't round which is a good thing to add towards the design i willtake from the reference with the head shape and placement of the eyes nose and mouth and design a more realistic approach with in my style.

the reference below is more for peter head this was what i was basing for his hair of having a lot and dark babies don't really have a lot so i think having a lot thinner like the image above.

peter pan head designs page 7

with this design i was very happy with the out come i feel that he does look a lot more baby like make him look more adorable. because time getting short and i still need to re animate peter with these design i think it would be best to just do another design taking from the designs below and adding in more of my style included in with it

 peter pan face redesigns 8

i re design the face again and kept on working on it until i am happy this design was very influence from the character boss baby which is explain further in this blog. the forehead being very exaggerated.

peter pan face redesigns 9

the  second lot of redesign i took from the drawing above and added in more childlike gestures to the character model i really like these character models and fell they they look quite professional i would of liked to inked them to make them look more cleaner but the rough sketch look works better. the gestures really work with peters characteristics having him confused sad happy etc. this also shows me if the design works which i will work towards more designs as i would like to get the character correct before jumping into any more animating towards peter.

Peter pan re design page 10

i experiment again with the head shape and it ended up looking very Alien like some of them i do like because of the distinctive skull shape. although the exaggeration on the forehead which i experiment with using a grid and drawing on his face. i have continue to used the eyes i have used before and happy with the face i prefer peter having a small face than a big face.

peter pan re designs page 11

the head shape i prefer with these and the tiny face work well with the exaggerated head making him look younger compared to the original designs he does look a lot younger and more baby like i widened his face same as the reference of Boss Baby i do like these but feel like this could be to like the boss Baby reference (reference later in the blog)

Peter pan re design page 12

with these design i went more wider for the face and felt it looks better but i feel that i would like to have a bigger choice of designs before going into animating the character again. i would like to keep more of my own style involved with the design of peter pan

peter pan re design page 13

Alice madness returns Doll Girl enemy

when playing a video game Alice madness returns i notice these character and their walk the doll girl is an enemy in this video game i felt that the walk was a good reference for the child like baby walk all though i feel that this is a lot less realistic and more cartoon. the reference video below wasn't great although the dolls do have arms its just when the play damages the enemy its arms are programs to fall off and shatter in the game. i can find the model online and could use it for reference for the design for peter.

Peter pan map drawing

i animated the map using the write on tool and drew over the map. it worked really well although the animation showed dot which i find doesn't help although i can fix it by key framing the opacity although i think that this method is untidy and think it would be best to use the map of Kensington gardens that i animated. it will look a lot cleaner and more professional.

Peter pan Map 2

i animated the the original map by revealing parts of the map that key to the narrative. i may add narration over this part to explain about the film being told from peters perspective. the animation is quite slow in which i will speed it up in premier. over all i am happy with the animation for this and the transition work well into the first shot of the scene.

Peter pan Map opening shot for the beginning of The Ageless Man

this animation is a more close representation to what i would like the opening to The Ageless Man film

the map appears and the houses emerge in the same area on the map where the houses are drawn. the camera flies through the roof tops of London where eventually we stop at peter pan house. this only goes as far to portray the camera flying through the roofs of London.

the whoel opening is the camera flying through the roof tops then down through the streets back to the roof tops and finally stopping outside a window where were see peter pan open it. originally in the story board it was a series of cuts of establishing shot of London and peters house then peter opens the window.

this i find is a lot better opening than the original with the cuts. it draws the audience into film and takes them on a interesting ride through the streets of London as if they were flying this i would like to experiment with music and colour balance to make to come out looking like nighttime.

3rd cut

did another compression which hasn't changed at all since the last composition. the map got good feed back and worked well which i was happy about the map could of been shorter which i have mentioned. when i've got the re animation finished i will be able to composite them together in
after and see it the re animation work towards the film.

peter walk extended

the re animation for the first shot i found worked great it it a definite improvement from the original. i need to add the hair and secondary animation of the hair as well. the character get small in the animation but i find that it work well with the way that children walks are random which is why its walk on animation instead of a walk cycle. i was worried about the arm movement and the leaning of the body.

peter pan shot 1 walk final test re animation

Final walk inked

peter pan turn line re animation test

the run i felt that didnt work well at all the leg movement was to high for a child to turn normally children would turn the upper body leaving their lower body static. another way is that it will take them a long time to turn because the steps that children take are very small steps in which turning step by step will take roughly thinking 10 seconds. which is too long to animate especially when i dont have a lot of time with re animating these. i will re animate this again and ananlys the result and come up with a decision.

peter pan walk re animated shot 3

with the walk cycle i decided to do walk like the first walk all on ones although with this shot it started to feel and look very repetitive i was going to make the character smaller to make it look like he walks further away from the camera and bigger to make the illusion that he is walking towards the camera. although with time getting short i am was unsure whether to animate it the same with have over 100 frames for this one shot.

Peter Pan starts to play line test

i animated peter playing his Pan pipes. originally i wanted to animate peter to music although due to the lost of time i decided to just imply that peter is playing music. i felt that this idea worked well and can be used for the future of this film. this scene is kind of a montage the background music is important to the scene to give the magic and wonderland atmospheric emotion to the audience. to save time on animating this i chose to use the 7 pipes

this is my 3 attempt at animating the walk for the wide shot of peter this animation i felt didn't work well for the film because his left leg move to quickly and when cycled doesn't work. peter in this shot is very small and not really noticeable.  i think i shall re animate it again untill i am happy with it and confident to play it in the final film.

peter pan MidShot Walk re Animated

i re animated the body movement of the mid shot walk of peter pan. i draw our the body movements first and the add the grid for his face placement. then add in his face the animated his hair after this the shot is finished and put through photoshop to be cutted out and composited

peter pan mid shot re animated 2nd attempt final

i re animated the mid shot of peter pan walking i feel that this is a lot better than the original and make hims look childlike. i really like the secondary animation with is hair. i am happy that i added in secondary animation as i normally forget or never have time to included secondary animation and happy that this worked well.

peter pan turn re animated attempt 3

i re animate peter turn and found it was a lot better than the first attempt and the second attempt.

Peter pan fourth CUT

over the Easter holidays i was able to finish the re animation of peter pan apart from the animation of when he plays his pan flute. the layout and edit of where the music it keeps changing with every cut.  i felt it would be best to wait until i have a solid cut with the any other added shots in, before animating peter playing along to the music. i would like to re animate the wide shot of peter's walk cycle and the animation of peter turning to face the fairy.  i understand that there is not a lot of time although i would like to be happy with the work i produced and feel confident to show it to people. the shot with peter raising his pan flute is still a line test and i need to cut it out on Photoshop ready for after effects. the male fairy after this shot i would like to add a small close up shot of him turning his head to acknowledge Peter playing music or at least on the same shot. the first shot of peter as i've mentioned is going to be cycled as in this shot you don't see a lot of the cycle because the map is covering him so cycling it will help with the transition for the map shot to the first shot of the animation.

Peter Pan Narration

'Before Neverland my first adventure was in Kensington Gardens, In London. Here is my story on how I, Peter Pan! Became the boy who wouldn't grow up.'

with the cut above the map shot does not have any narration and only music i'm not really intending to want narration but i feel that it would aid the audience and the producer when pitching this film. the narration may change until it works and makes sense and works towards the narrative.  wanted to have peter narrating his story of what happen before Neverland. the recoding of this went really well and when looking over the recoding a lot of it worked perfectly.

rugrats

for references for babies movement i thought about the nickelodeon animated series Rugrats. in the introduction the twin characters run in an plane like fashion. in which i would like to include in peter pan for when he is running around Kensington gardens. when watching the animated series i notice with the cinematography that the shots that would be a mid shot or a wide shot on the babies would to the scale of an adult would be a close up but to the scale towards the babies its a mid shot or wide. when a baby walks across the shot the walk cycle towards a baby looks like the character walk quite far and takes big steps. but its just because he shot is the scale of a baby and not to an adult character the baby character hasn't walked that far at all. it was a very interesting technique and could help a lot towards peter pan in the future.

Archer Baby AJ

for more baby references i look at baby AJ from the animated series of archer. the design look relatively realistic and fit with the aesthetic of archer. the scale look as if her face is bigger than her forehead in which i felt to go for the opposite to me i feel that babies have big fore head rather than the design of AJ

this close up of AJ is a better example with the face she has a chin portrayed which is something i could put towards peter as their was mention in my feedback of the design that their was no chin of peter.
the face design i think works but this aesthetics is completely different to my film. i was mainly looking at head shape to capture for peter. AJ has quite an wide round cornered square shape which is what i need to go for with peter.the hair is a great representation of what i am going for peter although peter will have a lot more compared to AJ.

Boss Baby

boss baby from dreamwork studio is the main inspiration this film has only recently been released and was advertise greatly during the production of peter pan. i really like this design of this character huge forehead is really good and fit with the aesthetic of my childlike drawing aesthetic.

below a more design toward boss baby unfortunately this is the only good picture i could get. the various of trail and error and seeing almost similar to my designs  with slight bean look i found was that i wasn't far off but still needed a lot of work on the design. although it is good to bare in mind that i specialize in animating not  character designing which was said lot through the production to remember its only me making this big film. these design i think will work to add a more baby like look to peter. from the Boss baby design i feel that the big eyes are something that i would not like to add to the character. i feel that the small button like eye that i have for peter works with the child like esthetic.

Baby Herman Who Framed Roger Rabbit

i looked at baby her man from who framed Rodger rabbit the big for head i think works well and i could used it for the design for peter and this did come to mind for the exaggerated head used for peter

Peter pan run cycle

Peter Pan run cycle 2

the final run cycle i found was awful i would like to re animate it in the future for the film when it has been funded

composition shot test

i did composition of peter running after animating the run cycle with the shots i feel that it was worked brilliantly towards making peter look more child like and excited. i will try to ink the animation and re composite the shot.

fairy test on 2s

animated the fairy that was behind the tree used for the shot above i felt that on two its seemed to slow as i originally wanted the fairies to move fast and have them to use their transportation a lot. i animated this with out a guide line to where the tree will be so i am hoping this will work around the tree on the left line of the rule of thirds grid.

fairy test on 1s

the test on 1's looked a lot better and i will use this timing for the final animation to go into the shot.

fairy watching peter run

i digitally coloured and inked the fairy watching peter which i am very happy with the result and need to composited it in after effects with the shot of peter running.

peter pan line test 2

Peter Pan Cut 5
the fifth cut changed dramatically compared to the fourth i re animated peter to be for exited and running around like a child would i was worried at first and felt that this wasn't the direction i wanted to go for the film. the first this thought came into my head i could vision it and felt that it wont work forwards the film after discussing it to my tutor in more detail after showing the fourth cut of the film i could the then visualise peter running around and doing childish thing after having the vision i was confident to go through with re animating peter for the 4th time. this cut was to portray to my tutors if this was the direction that they had in mind which the feed back i got was fantastic and said it worked a lot better. which i was thrilled. with that feedback i will continue creating the vision i had with the film. to me personally i was didn't really like the film if felt that the pacing was of and didn't fit with the music i felt maybe the voice acting of peter reactions didn't work towards the scene. but the tutors were very opposed to my thoughts in which i will continue with the new direction. i felt that this direction does work better towards the film and the scene represents the narrative well with peter being excited and in the narrative he has been wanting to get the this part of the gardens for months so naturally he would be very excited.

peter pan cut 5 with out voice

with this cut as ive mentioned i was unsure with the voice acting so i did a cut with out the voice acting which i find look great but i think the voice acting makes it work better with portraying peter characteristics as a child and excited.

re imagined  Peter Sequence Story Board

after feedback explain more towards the childlike qualities to add to peter i re imagined the sequence with Peter as i felt that the 5th cut which was the first composited cut together of peter being excited and running around like a child. i felt that with the 5th cut it didn't flow the pacing to me seemed off and out of tempo the the music. because of this i decided to re storyboard the sequence with peter this i felt would give me more confident as a filmmaker to go through with the new direction toward peter in this scene the storyboard i have produced in preproduction i feel were more like the first draft they only included the narrative on screen and during the pre production i discussed with my peers about wanting to get the narrative on screen then dig deeper into the character and their movement and characteristics. this storyboard covers this for peter in this scene this storyboard the second draft of the peter sequence essentially. which i feel this have gave me more knowledge towards the process of making a film in more detail which is extremely helpful for me as a film make. from this i have learn't that storyboard are not just one mount of storyboard page for a film it same as the animation process goes through different rushes and digs more in the the characteristics the narrative theme semiotics this will continue until the director is happy with the final draft of storyboards. through my degree a lot of storyboard have only been one draft now having two page of a second draft have help me learn this.

Peter pan running

i animated peter running chasing a fairy i feel that the body movement work brilliantly i still obviously need to add in his face and hair.

Peter sitting up

the animation of peter sitting up is after he falls back on to the ground and start doing show angel actions this i feel like there could of be frame taken out and some added. the body i felt should of stayed in one place and the drawing of the face at the end doesn't work with the shot.

Peter roar

this shot to a while to animate and i finally added in peter hair and  face. the idea i wanted was to have peter chasing a fairy and having him roaring in a childlike fashion. with his arm raised and his hands in a claw like motion.  with this i animated his face smiling with happiness and the shifting to him making a scary face. i was worried that this wouldn't work and if i would still have time to animate the fairy and added it in post. but i went with this anyway as it a very energetic movement and works brilliantly with it being traditionally animated. overall i am very happy with this movement and surprised that everything fitted together and excited to see it put together with after effects.

Peter pan Cut 6

i added a lot more to the film and decided to make a cut to get feedback as i felt that the shot when peter chases the fairy is quick and doesn't fit with the film and pacing.the narration works well and i perfectly time with the narration finishing and the choir starting and having it start when the map opens up to reveal the first shot of the scene. the scene all worked together and fitted with the scene. although when watching it back i feel that there is more domdinaced of peter in this scene were originally the fairies were more of a dominance.  the original idea and vision for the this scene was all focusing on the fairies. as this scene in the book was the introduction of the fairies in which in the film it was the same this which is why originally there wasn't much movement towards peter and not a lot of focus towards him this was used towards the wide shots of peter originally. i am unsure about this change although with showing just this part of the film for pitching and audience it is best to portray peters full characteristics in this scene in which is why i understand about the changes made to the film and the new direction with having peter be more excited and child like.

The Ageless Man Fairy Ball Scene Final Cut

The Ageless Man Fairy Ball Scene By Dominic Civil

i will be evaluating the video below of the final scene rather than the video above there is not difference besides that the film cut below has credits.  final cut will be used to help pitch this film in the future to gain funding and hire a small crew to make the whole 30 minutes to and hour long feature of the full film 'The Ageless Man'

over all with the final cut i am surprisingly happy with the huge amount of changes that has gone into this scene. at first during the production and having professional feedback explain it would be best of have peter running around and excited i couldn't visualise this in my head and with it being my film i wasn't very confident with going through with re animating peter to be running around i could partially visualise it but felt it wouldn't work and will take away from the magic and wonder set out towards this scene. when first looking at the changing i was really unhappy and felt uncomfortable with it feeling that Peter dominated the scene when originally and to the narrative of the book it is mainly revolving around the fairies and their culture which i feel is why so much detail and thought went into the fairy characters with different genres appearance culture and movement i adapted my own fairy culture and appearance and movement but still keeping faith the book. i feel that the narrative is still shown even more improved because of the re imaging of Peter the 'NEW' peter portray the character a lot better giving him more portrayal that he is a child portraying it instantaneously to the audience which is a vital for  the pitch getting the characteristic of the protagonist.

the process has been difficult to grasp but over time i have pick up the way of cutting out the white background the animated frames of Peter exporting them, then compositing them in after effects. ht process in after effect was very helpful the treatment of the technique was to create a almost cell animation but instead of acetate aftereffects layered all the components together which was a lot quicker and efficient. the process through after effect have been brilliant as time went got getting quicker and quicker i was able to even work out before animating what could be done in after effects for example the fairies wings which has made the traditional animation more directed towards what the traditional animation should be used for.

the animation in this i find need a lot of improvement this peter was only animated in two weeks using cycle to gain the efficiency need to finish this in time. over all i have happy that i did this new direction toward the character in this scene and i do like the animation but it need a lot of improvement. there are places where i feel there should be more frames added some where frames should be taken out and some that need Re animating again.  there is a lot more animation i would like to add for example the female fairy shot that flies up and halts to acknowledge peter playing i originally was having two character sat on the tree branch. the other was just going to watch one fly away but then recently had the idea to have her eating a bowl of food with her hands and watching the other fly away adding in more content from the book. in the top shot of peter spinning around and falling to the ground because peter is naked during the narrative realistically his genitalia would be in shot although i forgot to draw it in the shot. the shot zoom out quite far to i guess realistically you would see it the reason why this is a problem is that the use of nudity will provoke the audience which is something in animated film making i would like to create more mature films to take away from the stereotype of animation be for children. for example a Martin Scorsese inspired targeted towards adults with themes drugs usage and violence. this was experimented with the film Rango being target towards adults.

the pacing i feel i perfect it fits close to what i originally was going for with the animatic due the the new direction with the peter sequence it had to be change slightly for it to flow nicely with the rest of the scene i edited the pacing to what i felt was comfortable and i am happy with it i feel i have learnt a lot through this film about pacing as a lot of my previous films shots would be on far to long even thing the first cut of the animatic the shot where on screen too long. the cinematography is very much the same the framing with in the shot are virtually the same with the fairy sequence with peter there could be some improvement when peter run from left to right then right to left i could have his eye line in line the the top line of the grid of the rule of thirds or have his torso in line with the same line on the grid. another thought is that peter could have been running in the distance using the one of the cross over point in the rule of third grid.  the top shot of peter spinning i rough place on the top line of the grid so when his arm are out stretch on the first frame and mid key frame of the cycle his arm will be in line with the grid the placement of the background tree where all place the same as in the animatic which was in line with the vertical lines on the grid of the rules of third which i was very happy with. the shot with the fairy peering out from the tree i find is a brilliant framing the eye line is perfect with the top vertical line plus the tree and her self is perfectly in line with the left third.

with this film and this scene i will use it to pitch 'The Ageless Man' to companies to gain funding to hire a crew to help make the whole 30minutes or and an hour long feature of the whole film. the original time is around thirty minute long although some funding company may ask for a longer film which if need be i will extend the film to around an hour. the next step i with the film is to go over the storyboards of the whole film from pre production and naturally improve them creating a number of drafts of the story board of the film until i am happy with. i would not like to forcefully sit there and walk through it i would like to naturally in my own time come up with the re imagined storyboards of the full film after i am then go to pitch the idea.

The Ageless Man Fairy Ball Scene Development Process Final Film For Submission.

this final film for submission is below this includes all of the cuts from this production of The Ageless Man fairy ball scene portraying the development process of this one scene. this is helpful as the animation towards the final cut of the film isn't great and parts of it was animated ink scanned in composted and edited in two weeks because of the re imagining and different direction to take the protagonist in with in this scene. because of this audience may think that it it took me 3 months to make something with terrible animation, using this film shows the audience the amount of effort, hard work and changes to make an animated scene to the final cut not just and animated film in genereal but this animated scene alone.  with the proposal i have been very accurate  with including a number of cuts in this final film the asthetics have been to the proposal and sticking to the use of traditional and digital animation and layering and compositing in after effects.

the development film its self i really like and even was surprised myself with how far this film and this scene has come. the character has been developed several times the fairies i have tested number of times for me to get accurate with the references of dragonflies and damselflies which i was happy that managed to capture that with in the animation.  the film its self  feel that the pacing work the text can be on very long but i prefer to have it on longer enough for the audience to read it comfortably. i was unsure whether to add in a title card and credits but i felt because it was the final film for submission so i felt it was need i was happy with the results of the title card and credits i ws going to add in my DC ANIMATIONS logo at the end of the whole film but its bright orange an white and felt out of place. the film over all is a great expression of the amount of work gone it to get from the original idea to the final cut of the scene which i am happy to portray to help the audience understand what i have create.

the animation process has been very education giving almost identical experience as working in the industry. with the feedback i go from rush asking re animation add more characteristics experimenting with making it more realistic to a child has been thoroughly pleasant.  its started as quite an annoyance but over time i have understood the animation process more clearly understanding that the first rush isn't going to be the final. i was happy that the first cut animation i had even re animated peter already by then and actually review my animation and gave my self feedback and worked into the animation.

over all with the film 'The Ageless Man'  it is very under developed and need more improvement as a film. as i've mention creating the second draft of the film storyboard and creating a animatic of the full film after all of storyboards are done.

I am happing with what i have produced and have learnt a lot with the production of this film as a film maker and as an animator
